Custom Pens

     We are happy to turn any piece of wood legally acquired into a pen.  There may be an old favorite chair, a backyard tree, a barn board, teak from your boat, oak from the floor of your house or any other significant wood to you.  Send it to us and we will turn it into a pen.
     Please note, any stain or varnish will be removed from the wood during turning and may leave an uneven color.  If requested, we can attempt to match the original stain color but it may not be exact.  Old wood often has cracks and hidden imperfections only obvious after turning.  These imperfections may be visible in the final product.
     All wood must be at least 3/4" by 3/4" by 5 1/2".  We request that you send at least two pieces of this size.  Extra wood will not be returned.  Sometimes, during the drilling and turning process the wood will shatter and be unuseable.  While every effort will be made to preserve it, we may not be able to create the pen if the wood is of poor quality. Sometimes, the pieces of wood can be glued, but cracks will be appearent.  
     Wood must properly dry before use.  If wood is freshly cut, it must go through a drying process, which often takes several months but we are experimenting with faster processes.  If a trimming is taken from a tree, leave the bark in place and cut the ends.  Paint these ends ASAP with any paint available (even spray paint).  We will test the moisture content and hold the wood until it is dry.  Cracking may still occur in a delayed fashion.
