St. John's Bread Pen   


 
     The Carob is better known from the New Testament, rather than the Old Testament. The pods are sweet and serve as a substitute for sugar.  It has sustained many people throughout history and helped to prevent starvation.  In the bible it is mentioned in relation to both Jesus and St John.

     "He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything."  (Luke 15:16)
     "John wore clothing made of camels hair with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate carob pods and wild honey."  (Mark 1:6)

     The tree grows throughout the Mediterranean, reaching heights of fifty feet or more.  It thrives in arid conditions.  The carob pod is uniform in size and weight, and in ancient days the pod was used as a standard weight. Today, it has given rise to the term "carat". The tree is protected by law with a fine of six months in jail and $5,000, making this a difficult wood to acquire.  All wood has been legally obtained from prunings in Israel.
